An Auspicious Beginning
(Blog entry written while in Armenia)
On Friday, Sept. 2 we left JFK bound for Paris. I was lucky to connect with Dr. Edgar as I waited in line to check in for my flight, so I knew I was on the right plane. (Always important!) The flight was fairly uneventful (I did get to watch both To Catch a Thief and Over the Hedge), but we had what I considered an auspicious start, as Vice President Al Gore was on the same flight. Though he was nowhere near where I was (not surprisingly he wasn't in coach), it's always fun to know that you're traveling with someone of his stature.
After the two flights and the six long layover, we all arrived in Yerevan, Armenia a bit bleary-eyed but in good spirits. We connected with our tour guides and after a thirty minute arrived at the Hotel.
Thought most people decided to go to bed (it was midnight, after all) a few of us less prudent types decided to check out the night life. Lead by our Armenian American friend, Narek, we found an outdoor cafe/bar and ate far too much pizza and an incredibly interesting Armenia dish that was a thin, oblong piece of bread that had a middle that was like a shallow bowl, which was filled by runny cooked egg. Add beer, a few interesting attempts by the bar tender to make an apple martini (one was clear with a peppery/sweet flavor and an olive and lemon garnish and the other was an odd green color with two ice cubes and lacking any kind of apple taste) and our small group had a great introduction to the city at night.
Now we just have to get up for an 8 am breakfast ...
