Faithful America Press Release on My Trip
Representative will wield hammer and camera to help tell the story of Armenian homlessness
FaithfulAmerica.org announced today that Becca Doten of Los Angeles, California has been chosen to represent FaithfulAmerica in the Habitat for Humanity International’s Armenia Build on Sept. 1-10. Doten will join NCC General Secretary Dr. Bob Edgar and twenty-five volunteers as part of “Building on Faith” the National Council of Churches USA’s commitment to combat extreme poverty and homelessness in Yerevan, Armenia.
Ms. Doten was chosen from more than one hundred applicants as part of FaithfulAmerica’s effort to support “Building on Faith” and help shed light on the problem of poverty and homelessness in this landlocked country. Armenia, bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Iran, has a population of 3 million, 45% of whom live in poverty. Many live in metal shacks erected years ago as part of earthquake relief housing, which magnifies the cold in winter and the heat in summer.
"In the building of homes for Armenian families, we will also be building friendship and understanding between cultures,” Doten said. “I hope this can serve as a small reminder of the bonds between the human family and our collective call to serve those who are in need."
In addition to wielding a hammer, Doten will serve as FaithfulAmerica’s field reporter, providing regular updates on the FaithfulAmerica website (www.faithfulamerica.org.) Director Vince Isner explained, “Becca was chosen not only because she can weild a hammer, but she is skilled with a pen and camera as well. Becca holds a degree in cinema and television, and in her job as a legislative deputy in the California State Senate advanced the master plan to end poverty in California We couldn’t have found a better person for the task.”
Becca Doten’s daily reports from Armenia will be available beginning September 4 on both the FaithfulAmerica.org and National Council of Churches’ websites. ( www.faithfulamerica.org and www.councilofchurches.org.)
