The Journey Begins

Saturday, Sept. 2
(blog entry written while in Armenia)

Hello! Or, as they say in Armenia, Barev. I'’m sitting in the lounge of the "“Golden Tulip"” Hotel (AKA Hotel Yerevan) in Yerevan, Armenia, sipping on a glass of crisp wine and typing away. What sounds like Armenian easy listening music plays quietly in the background, coupled with the gentle sound of water from the lounge fountain. The hotel has wireless internet (yay) but unfortunately G4 PowerBooks --– like mine -- are unable to connect (boo). Thankfully, however, they tell me we can plug in via Ethernet cables in our rooms. Let's hope that works. (Editor's note: it didn't work. I had to wait Marriott Hotel the next day...)

I'm in Armenia for a Habitat for Humanity build and documenting the experience for FaithfulAmerica.org and the National Council of Churches (NCC). I'’m honored to have been chosen for this journey and I look forward to sharing my experiences through this blog.

I'm traveling with 18 or so volunteers who are affiliated with the NCC -- several of whom are ministers of various faith denominations. We are especially honored to be led by Dr. Robert Edgar, the Executive Director of the NCC and a former Congressmember. He has participated in several international HFH builds and brings incredible experience and knowledge to the group -- along with a few too many bad jokes. (Seriously. I don't think he can go more than ten minutes without making a pun ... )

Our part of the actual Habitat build does not start until Tuesday, so today and tomorrow our group is exploring the sites and sounds of this wonderful country. I know already that it will be impossible to relay everything that I would like to, but I will try to hit on various pieces of the experience.

So thanks for reading and please come back to share our adventures.
